THE VALUE OF AFRICAN PRINT IN GHANA

Ghana is a country on the African Continent endowed with a lot of natural resources that has attracted the attention of the west in particular; and has been described as a base for development of western Countries. Entrepreneurs play an important role in the economy of the country. Countries such as Italy, France and England have realised the importance of the creative industry to boost their economic profile, as many investors understand that labels can create jobs, empower citizens in acquiring practical skills and creating alternative avenues to the traditional educational routes. Entrepreneurship in fashion and in life in general leaves on the next generation a long-lasting legacy, as it teaches the necessary skills of manufacturing, designing, marketing and revenue production because it pushes individuals not to rely on anyone other than themselves and their abilities to create their own line. The wax fabric can be sorted into categories of quality due to the processes of manufacturing. Normally, the fabrics are sold in 12 yards as "full piece" or 6 yards as "half piece". The colors comply with the local preferences of the customers. The wax prints are part of a nonverbal way of communication among African women, and hereby they carry their message out into the world. Some wax prints can be named after personalities, cities, building, sayings or occasions. Some fabrics are mostly designed to mirror various African cultures and traditions, examples of some clothes are kente, "Nsu Bura", "sika w) Ntaban", "Akyikyi de3 akyi", stool, "Aba Nkawa" just to mention a few we also have the smock. African print can be used for decoration it can also be worn to special occasions like naming ceremony, wedding, funerals, birthday parties and other important gatherings. African prints can also be used for ladies hand fan, slippers, heels, bags, hair bonnets and swimming costumes. Every colour in the kente clothe tells a story. This shows the strength of the clothing and textile industry in Ghana and how they promote cross cultural relationships. In Ghana, there are a number of fashion industries who are producing African print garments and clothes that adopts the western style. You will now see suits and jackets being made of a mixture of western cotton materials and local African prints. Some other local clothing shops currently prefer buying fabrics from international market which is gradually killing the local industry. If we want to expand and really communicate our culture in what we wear, then there is a need to produce local clothes from traditional fabrics. It is important for Africans to wear what we produce to boost the fashion and clothing industry in Ghana and all across Africa.
