TYPES OF AFRICAN PRINTS




Ghana is known to be one of the leading countries in the production of fabric prints.  The two main companies that produce fabrics are Ghana Textiles Printers (GTP) and Akosombo Textiles Limited (ATL).The fabrics produced in Ghana have local names .”Yaw Donkor” , “ Ama Serwaa “ and many others. it’s easy to see fingers, elephants, birds, cutlass and many more.

One of the patterns in Ghana is “ Sika Wo Antaban “,it means money has wings and indeed money flies to wherever it wants to go. One might lose the money if he or she does handle it well.

Another African print is “Nsubra” which means “well”(well water). The tiny dots in form of a spiral, resemble the form made when water is fetched from the well .

Adinkra, one of the African prints in Ghana means “Goodbye or Farewell “ in Akan language ( Twi).
The cloth is being worn on important occasions especially at funeral of family and friends. The cloth also represents sorrow.

The Angelina Cloth, this print is one ugh colorful designs. It is worn by both genders in Ghana,. The fabric is being named after the first person who wore it, her name is Angelina. This fabric is good for all occasions .

Ahsan print stands for Guinea fowl. In Ghana, most people prefer the fowl to be grilled. It is mostly found in soups and sauce. Most people do not like  the idea of it being so lean.

The “Akyekyede3  Akua” pattern means the back of a tortoise. The print really resemble the back of a tortsie shell with its rough shape. Some people say those who wear it are likely to be like the back of a tortoise shell,  that  is they are “protective”.
