TRAILBLAZERS IN THE FASHION INDUSTRY

A chunk of us loves the finer things in life like wine, great food, good company and of course the warmth that clothes create. We all like to look prim, proper and presentable.

Ghana is known for so many things like our beautiful tourist sites, our minerals, our hospitals and our infamous african wax print inspired fashion trends. But how well do you know the amazing brands and designers behind the scenes that work tirelessly in promoting the african wax print?

I doubt most of you do. If you don’t, it’s really nothing to be embarrassed about. I am here for you! Let me be your guide.
You might be wondering what exactly has these designers done to influence the african fashion scene abroad.

These fashion designers and brands in ghana have explored the various ways of creating varying “out of the box” designs with the african wax print and have created some sort of media frenzy around the globe all the while, maintaining the authenticity of the fabrics. Some have styled and influenced international celebrities like BeyoncĂ©, Rihanna, Alicia Keys, Lady Gaga and even Michelle Obama. They have also influenced the crave for owning, at least, a piece of an african wax print like the dashiki, ankara and the kitenge around the globe.

Mr. Kofi Ansah in his elements.

Kofi Ansah is the first designer i want to discuss. He propelled Ghana on to the catwalks of haute couture. He was, in every right sense of the word a pioneer in promoting modern African styles and design on international stage. He initially made his name working on the UK fashion scene where he debuted his career by making a beaded top for Princess Anna he was the founder and past president of the Federation of African designers and has won several awards. He used applique, embroidery and quilting a lot in his work. Sadly, he died in 2014.

Jason Jermaine Asiedu on the red carpet of Glitz Style Awards.

Jason Jermaine Asiedu has become highly popular both in Ghana and some parts of the world. His designs involve creating elements that complements different body types. His attention to detail is top-notch and impressive. He's a very talented young designer that has collaborated with various influencers such as Celeste Van Joost and has gained recognition in the international fashion landscape.

Claudia Lumor in all her glory.

Claudia Lumor is literally a breath of fresh air. The fashion scene now, would probably look a little bit different if not for her timely intervention and arrival into the fashion scene. She is the brain behind the popular annual fashion show in Ghana, Glitz Africa fashion week that brings together numerous people from around the globe to celebrate and award African fashion designers, fashion influencers and creatives. Young and upcoming designers are always looking for a chance to be invited and nominated for their input and contribution to promoting African wax print inspired designs and styles to the world.

A beautiful collection from Christie Brown

Christie Brown is a Ghanaian based luxury women's fashion brand that aims to satisfy the stylish urge of the woman seeking a taste of true independence, sophistication and class. It is owned by two amazing women. I like to state that their designs is truly liberating and not for the faint of heart. Each design they create has a unique feature. They've styled Beyonce and her dance crew once in the past and recently during the "Year of Return" they created a masterpiece for Beyonce's mum which had Ghana trending on Twitter for some days!

These people have not only created a niche for themselves in Ghana but have also managed to make their works travel outside the country. They have one way or the other made the African wax print very popular and has helped in promoting healthy foreign exchange.
